Have you been thinking for a while about the well-known cycling route that runs through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia? The so-called Parenzana, Porečanka or Istranka. A beautiful route named after the former narrow-gauge railway that operated between 1902 and 1935 between Trieste and Poreč.
In 2008, this varied 123 km route was restored and opened for cyclists and walkers. This gave us one of the most attractive cycling routes in Europe, distinguished by an exceptional story and breathtaking scenery. Cycling past old railway stations, through tunnels and over viaducts is just the icing on the cake of this worthwhile journey.
The Parenzana, which runs through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, was cycled and documented by Dr. Janko Ferk from Klagenfurt. As an excellent expert and scholar of the Habsburg Monarchy, he added a rich historical overview of the construction and events surrounding the famous Istrian railway line to his detailed cycling route description.
The route can be tackled sportively and completed in one go, but Istria, the picturesque villages and stone towns, the blend of three cultures, proximity to the sea and Mediterranean landscape invite you to take a multi-day cycling journey.
