Garmin Radars & Bike Lights – See and Be Seen on the Road
The Radars & Lightening category at Šport 11 brings together Garmin's cycling safety electronics: rear-view radars that warn you about vehicles approaching from behind, radar tail lights, front bike lights, and the mounts and accessories that go with them. It is aimed at road, gravel and mountain bikers, e-bike riders and anyone who rides in traffic, at dawn, at dusk or in poor weather.
What this category covers
- Rear-view bike radars (Garmin Varia) – detect vehicles approaching from behind and alert you with a sound and an on-screen warning on your bike computer, watch or phone.
- Radar tail lights – combine radar and rear light in one unit, changing the flash pattern as a vehicle closes in.
- Radar with built-in camera – warns you and records the road behind you, which can serve as evidence after an incident.
- Front lights – for lighting the road or trail after dark and for daytime visibility, often with a beam that adjusts to your speed.
- Mounts and accessories – seatpost mounts (including aero profiles), out-front handlebar mounts, charging cables and spare parts.
How to choose
- Radar, light or both: if you already run a good rear light, a standalone radar is enough; a combined unit saves space and weight on the seatpost.
- Detection range: Garmin Varia radars pick up approaching vehicles from up to roughly 140 metres behind, giving you time to react.
- Compatibility: check that the unit works with your Garmin Edge bike computer, Garmin watch or smartphone through the Varia app; pairing uses ANT+ or Bluetooth.
- Front light output and beam: lit city streets need fewer lumens, while unlit roads and gravel call for a stronger light with an even beam that does not dazzle oncoming traffic.
- Runtime: compare battery life in steady and flashing modes as well as charging time – the daytime flash mode usually lasts longest.
- Mounting: a round or aero seatpost, a saddle bag or a rack all affect which mount you need; the radar must point straight back with a clear view.
- Weather resistance: for riding in rain and mud, choose units with a stated water-resistance rating.

Frequently asked questions
How does a bike radar work?
The radar mounts at the rear of the bike and scans the road behind you for approaching vehicles. When it detects one, it sends an audible and visual alert to the paired bike computer, watch or phone.
Do I need a bike computer to use a radar?
Not necessarily – the radar can also pair with a compatible Garmin watch or with a smartphone via the Varia app. With a Garmin Edge computer the alerts are usually easiest to read at a glance.
Does a radar replace my rear light?
Radar tail lights have a built-in light, so they do both jobs. A radar-only unit without a light does not replace the rear light required for riding on public roads.
Should I use lights during the day?
Yes – daytime flash modes are designed exactly for this and make you far easier to spot, while the radar warns you about traffic by day and night alike.
How are these devices charged?
Garmin radars and lights use a built-in rechargeable battery that charges via a USB cable.
