Atomic Backland 102 – Lightweight Freeride Touring Skis
Atomic Backland 102 are lightweight, high-performance touring skis for skiers who want to explore remote mountain terrain and enjoy powder and variable snow conditions on the descent. A waist width of approximately 102 mm provides good flotation, while the lightweight construction allows for efficient progress on long ascents.
The model was developed for freeride ski touring, where both low weight on the ascent and reliable, playful handling on the descent matter. The balanced construction allows you to explore wide-open slopes, ride through soft snow, and confidently handle different snow surfaces.
HRZN 3D for Better Flotation in Powder
HRZN 3D Backland technology uses a lightweight, three-dimensionally shaped tip that increases the surface area of the ski's front section. This improves flotation in deep snow and makes it easier to guide the ski through powder and soft, chopped-up snow.
The tip rises above the snow surface more quickly, requiring less effort when skiing and allowing for more relaxed turn linking. This technology is especially useful on touring descents through freshly fallen snow.
Powder Rocker for Playful Handling
The Powder Rocker 20/65/15 profile combines a pronounced rocker in the tip and tail with classic camber underfoot. The rocker makes it easier to initiate turns and pivot in soft snow, while the camber provides responsiveness, better edge contact with the surface, and stability on firmer sections.
The directional shape with a more moderate tail rocker increases the effective edge length. This allows the skis to maintain stability at higher speeds and provides more reliable grip when traversing and skiing on firmer surfaces.
Lightweight Wood Core for Long Ascents
The Ultra Light Woodcore is made from a combination of poplar and karuba wood. Poplar provides responsiveness and stability, while the lightweight karuba wood helps reduce the overall mass of the ski. The result is a good balance between climbing efficiency and descent performance.
The FreeTour Profile construction uses more wood and less fiberglass, metal, and resin than the previous design. This reduces weight and the emissions associated with the materials used, while maintaining the ski's capable and dynamic character.
Stability and Good Edge Grip
Layers of fiberglass improve torsional stability and ensure calm, predictable behavior at higher speeds. The Dura Cap Sidewall construction runs from the base to the top sheet, combining good edge grip with added resistance to damage.
An 87° side edge angle and a 1° base edge angle are chosen for intuitive handling, easy turn initiation, and reliable grip on firmer snow surfaces.

Who Are They For?
Atomic Backland 102 are designed for experienced ski tourers who prioritize descent quality but still need sufficiently lightweight equipment to access the best lines. They feel best in powder, soft snow, on open slopes, and on tours with greater elevation gain.
Thanks to the available lengths and balanced construction, they suit a range of heights and skiing styles. Shorter lengths offer more maneuverability, while longer lengths provide additional stability, flotation, and support at higher speeds.
Touring bindings and climbing skins are not included with the skis and should be selected separately based on the chosen length, ski boot, body weight, and intended use.
